The Old Fashioned Way Review

Today I've got a book review for you :)

As you can probably see, this copy has been thoroughly read :D

It's called "the old fashioned way" by Ginger Kolbaba and it's the devotional for the movie Old Fashioned (I think I'll do a review of the movie later on). You can pick up your copy here or in any bookstore near you. You can also take a glimpse at the first chapter and the table of contents on  Amazon.

It contains 40 short texts and questions for journaling at the end of each chapter.

So what is this book about? It is about courtship, dating, boundaries,
biblical relationships - but in my opinion, it's mostly about self-discovery.

By going through these 40 days (in fact, it took me much longer than 40 days; a little more than 4 months because I took my time for each chapter), I learned a lot about myself. About the expectations I place on my relationship. The patterns I've followed and still follow in my relationships. What I want in life. The kind of person I want to become. And, most important, how to deal with my past. I went through anger, regret and in the end I am now able to forgive myself.

Ginger's style of writing is easily accessible and very engaging. Reading the book feels like chatting with a friend or mentor. But this doesn't mean that she doesn't talk about tough issues. Ginger has no problem whatsoever to adress problematic attitudes and behaviour in relationships, but she never gets offensive or legalistic. The questions are always thought-provoking and encourage self-reflection. I really enjoyed journaling my thoughts and reading through the short chapters.

So what's my overall conclusion? I love this book. I highly recommend it to anyone. Even if you're not Christian or totally determined to start a courtship, you can learn a lot from this book.

Disclaimer: This is an independent and honest review. I haven't received anything from the publisher to read or review it.

So what are your favorite books on relationships?

  1. Great review! One of the favored books in our home on boy/girl relationships is written by a wonderful couple named Eric and Leslie Ludy. The book is When God Writes Your Love Story.

    1. Thank you Cheryl :) Might put that on my "to-read" list (when I'm done with all the other books, that is ^^)

  2. Great review. This is also one of my favorites.

  3. Never heard of this book before - will have to give it a look. Thanks for sharing at Over the Moon. We look forward to seeing what you have to share with us next week.

I'd love to hear from you!
